Man did we get hit with a huge snow storm Friday night. My husband & I are from IA originally, so we are use to snow from mid-October to March, but people in NC aren't. When my husband went to the store Friday night to get bread, there was hardly anything left for bread, milk & eggs.
We got a good amount of snow (11 in.) and our neighbors who have lived here all their lives said that they haven't gotten that much snow in 15 years. With that said, when I woke up Saturday morning around 7 am, I started my coffee pot, got the kids breakfast and watched the local channel to check out any business closings in town. I mainly wanted to see if the YMCA was closed for the day. And of course, CLOSED!
Now, I had two options, consider Saturday as my free day since I can't go to the gym, or figure out another way to get in my upper body workout. Well since we were snowed in, I thought what a better way of getting in my workout then to get out there and shovel some snow. So, I drank my coffee, threw on some sweats, my tennis shoes and a sweatshirt (because to me, it wasn't that cold for the multiple layers), I headed outside and got to work.
For me in the past, I would typically do about 10-15 minutes, get bored and tired, and throw my hands up, go inside and be done. But this time, I got my iPod out, and got to work. I started to shovel our driveway, and 30 minutes into it, I already started to feel the shirt I was wearing underneath my sweatshirt starting to get soaked. During that time, my husband came out to help shovel, and my kids came out and was prepping their fort for the big snowball fight that they were planning with the neighborhood kids. It felt good to have that family outdoor activity versus sitting inside, just staring at the snow. And while we were shoveling the snow, one of our neighbors was walking by with her dog, and I ended up taking a break from shoveling snow, and took our two dogs and walked the subdivision with our neighbor. It felt good to go with a neighbor and talk about random things, and get a great walk in.
Now, since my husband and I are use to this weather and our neighbors are of the older generation, my husband and I decided to shovel out three more of our neighbors and clean off their cars. By the time we finally were all done, it was 10:30 am. We spent 3 hours shoveling snow. My arms, shoulder & back were aching. I came inside and finally made our breakfast, and got all cleaned up from the Sweatfest outside from all of that shoveling.
Since, my husband is a chiropractor, he had me do spinal molding so that my back would not spasm from all of that strenuous work. And as added benefit of it, it helps once the discs cool down from all of that work, I want it to mold in the correct position of the spine. It was nice to just lay down and relax.
Later on that evening, we had a Christmas party that we had to go to. So we took the kids to a sitter for overnight, and I didn't want to gorge on the appetizers that were going to be at the party. So, we stopped at a diner and got some dinner. I ended up ordering from the kids' menu because I didn't want to gorge on the food as well. I have always taught my kids and myself that we should eat until we feel comfortable, not until we cannot take that last bite. So that is why I ordered from that kids' menu.
We got to the party and had a great time. It was nice to get an adult only night. To actually have an adult conversation, not about Sponge Bob Squarepants, or Barbie, etc. I tried to be pretty good about not grabbing a big plate and mounding the food on the plate. I nibbled here and there, but made sure to get up and walk away from the table, and play on the Wii that they had set up and in the pool room.
